Total Knee Replacement
After a knee is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, it may be prevented from moving normally and require a surgical repair. A knee replacement involves removing the damaged areas of the knee and replacing with new components and restoring the function and surface of the knee. During the procedure, the worn surfaces at the end of the thighbone are removed using special instruments. The bone is then shaped to prepare for the new covering. Then the top of the shinbone (tibia) is prepared in a similar way. The worn surface is removed and a new metal surface is placed on top of the remaining bone. In between the two implant surfaces Dr. Hecht will add a new spacer or shock absorber between the smooth metal coverings. These components are fixed to the bone surface usually with bone cement. Towards the end of the surgery after the implants have been secured, Dr. Hecht will move your knee joint to make sure it moves normally and to confirm it works in tandem with the supporting muscles and ligament tissues.
Dr. Hecht utilizes the Smith and Nephew Visionaire & Verilast Custom Fit Implant Systems as implant options for his knee patients.
The VISIONAIRE Patient Matched instruments help Dr. hecht achieve more optimal implant alignment, custom to your unique knee anatomy.
Dr. Hecht will scan MRI (Magnetic Resonance Images) and X-Ray images of your affected leg into an advanced web-based software program, which will generate virtual images of your knee. Surgical instruments and guides are then designed and built, mapping out specific bone cuts to accurately align the implant to your knee.
Because VISIONAIRE technology removes multiple steps from the traditional surgical technique, your time under anesthesia may be reduced. This may lead to less blood loss and a lower risk of infection.
VISIONAIRE Patient Matched instruments allow your surgeon to achieve precise alignment of your knee, potentially reducing wear Ð a leading cause of early implant failure.
Customized VISIONAIRE◊ instruments enable a less invasive surgical procedure which can reduce soft tissue and muscle damage which may speed your recovery time.
A knee implant accurately aligned with the VISIONAIRE system may not only feel more natural, but may also last longer than traditional knee replacements. Even a slightly misaligned implant can cause uneven implant wear, loosening and instability, which can contribute to early implant failure and follow-up surgeries.
You may be able to take less pain medication for a shorter time with minimally-invasive surgery. By reducing the amount of muscle and soft tissue damage, youÕll have a smaller scar and experience less pain during recovery.

30 Simulated Years of Wear Performance
Verilast – 30 years
The brightest minds at orthopedic medical technology company Smith & Nephew have worked for years to minimize concerns about a leading cause of knee replacement failure implant wear. While scientific literature indicates knee replacements should be expected to last 10 to 15 years before wear becomes an issue, Smith & Nephew has always thought they could do better for physically active patients.
So they invented VERILAST◊ Knee Technology – a combination of remarkable materials that were tested to simulate 30 years of wear performance. That’s more than twice the length of testing of knee replacements made from traditional materials, cobalt chrome metal and high density plastic.
So while they cannot say they’ve eliminated a leading cause of implant failure, Smith & Nephew believes their 20 years of dedicated research are paying off for patients who would like to rediscover their active life after surgery.
About Knee Replacement Surgery
There are potential risks with knee replacement surgery such as loosening, fracture, dislocation, wear and infection that may result in the need for additional surgery. Do not perform high impact activities such as running and jumping unless your surgeon tells you the bone has healed and these activities are acceptable. Early device failure, breakage or loosening may occur if you do not follow your surgeon’s limitations on activity level. Early failure can happen if you do not guard your knee joint from overloading due to activity level, failure to control body weight or accidents such as falls. Knee replacement surgery is intended to relieve knee pain and improve knee functions.
