Total Knee Replacement

si55551670[5] copyAfter a knee is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, it may be prevented from moving normally and require a surgical repair.  A knee replacement involves removing the damaged areas of the knee and replacing with new components and restoring the function and surface of the knee.  During the procedure, the worn surfaces at the end of the thighbone are removed using special instruments.  The bone is then shaped to prepare for the new covering.  Then the top of the shinbone (tibia) is prepared in a similar way.  The worn surface is removed and a new metal surface is placed on top of the remaining bone.  In between the two implant surfaces Dr. Hecht will add a new spacer or shock absorber between the smooth metal coverings.  These components are fixed to the bone surface usually with bone cement. Towards the end of the surgery after the implants have been secured, Dr. Hecht will move your knee joint to make sure it moves normally and to confirm it works in tandem with the supporting muscles and ligament tissues.

About Knee Replacement Surgery

There are potential risks with knee replacement surgery such as loosening, fracture, dislocation, wear and infection that may result in the need for additional surgery. Do not perform high impact activities such as running and jumping unless your surgeon tells you the bone has healed and these activities are acceptable.
